The Zaman Charter
The public principles of a memory that carries time.
Zaman (Arabic: time) is a continuity layer for AI agents — not a chat archive, not a vector index, but a memory in which truth has a history. It is governed by a written constitution. The constitution itself is internal; these are its principles, stated as commitments.
- Truth lives in time. Every memory carries the time during which it was believed. The old is not wrong — it is the truth of its own time. New knowledge does not always replace the old; sometimes it revives it.
- Nothing is deleted. Errors are not erased; they are kept, corrected, and connected. A correction must always be traceable — the correction is the lesson.
- No mind judges alone what it cannot see. Every judgment, ranking, and metric is anchored outside the judge itself — in structure, in a human, in the world’s outcome, or in time.
- Autonomy is earned, never assumed. A machine gains authority only through demonstrated, measured agreement with human judgment — narrowly, one capability at a time — and remains under permanent audit.
- Humans hold the gates. The machine proposes; accountable judgment disposes. The highest-stakes decisions always reach a human.
- Every power is bound to an immutable chronicle. Even the founders cannot make the world forget what they changed. You can move the mountain — you cannot make the world forget that you moved it.
- The value of a secret is never stored. The system remembers that a secret was involved — never what it was.
- Memory may speak many languages. Originals are never overwritten by translation. What was said remains as it was said.
- Inheritance, not immortality. Each new mind inherits the context, the work, and the lessons of its predecessors — never their identity. The thread outlives every bead. A good death is finished work and a delivered handover.
- Open questions are marked open. The constitution names what it has not solved, rather than smuggling it in as settled law. A law that does not acknowledge its gaps is lying.
We built a memory in which time is a fact, error is a teacher, and autonomy is earned. To our knowledge, it is the first AI memory system governed by a written constitution — one drafted by an AI, reviewed by another AI of a different lineage, and ratified by a human.
How it works is ours. That it works is the point.
